2 & 9 November

First action in the Indoor Cup

The new indoor cricket season is underway, with each team having played once in the Cup competition.  There are two groups of four teams, with the eventual winners qualifying for the ECB national competition.  There have been no surprises yet, with the big favourites, Truro and St Austell, recording comfortable wins.  Truro made 116 for 4 against a decent Newquay side, Rob Harrison scoring 30 not out.  Joe Crane top scored with 31 for Newquay, who were all out for 85.  In the same group, the most competitive tie of the first round went to the final ball, as Wadebridge’s Rob Centini and young Sam Richards scrambled through for the winning three runs and 18 in all from the last over in a fairly low-scoring game with Ladock.  Centini ended on 27* and Charlie Ellis had earlier made 25*, Richard Bray (24) being the leading batsman for Ladock.

Beacon got past the hundred against Roche, led by Matt Floyd (29*) and James Pook (26*), but their opponents lost too many early wickets and folded to 42 all out, including three run outs.  However, James Hunkin made an attacking 25 before being bowled.  St Austell’s Gary Bone (46*), Scott Barrott (33*) and Matt Ellison (28) had a field day against Truro’s second string, before bowling them out for 40, Barrott completing a fine all-round display by taking 3 wickets for 10 runs.

Results: Group A – Truro 116-4, Newquay 85 (Truro won by 31 runs); Ladock 89, Wadebridge 90-2 (Wadebridge won by 4 wickets).  Group B – Beacon 106-3, Roche 42 (Beacon won by 64 runs); St Austell 162-3, Truro 2nd 40 (St Austell won by 122 runs).

23 & 30 November

Beacon, Truro & St Austell through to Cup semis

Two more evenings of indoor cricket have seen three of the ‘big guns’ through to the semi-finals of the CCB Cup competition.  Beacon and St Austell now have maximum points in Group B but, in Group A, Wadebridge can just pip Newquay to the final place if they manage to overcome Truro 1, who have already qualified.

Newquay and St Austell recorded comfortable wins over Ladock and Roche respectively.  Jacob Rowe made a valiant 35 out of Roche’s 74 all out, but that was never enough, as St Austell’s Alex Bone (25*) and Matt Ellison (26*) knocked off the required runs in half of the allotted overs.  Newquay got past the hundred mark thanks to Richard Spall (28*) and Joe Crane (31*) and their score of 104-3 was just a bit much for Ladock, whose reply was respectable, but never quite up with the required rate.  Dave Legge made 28 not out in their 86 for 4.

Wadebridge and Newquay played out an interesting, though low-scoring match, with Newquay eventually cruising to victory, but the Swans were in the hunt after 8 of the 12 overs.  Their 79 for 5 (Jodie Ross 23) was well below par, but they bowled well and hung on until Will Cooke’s solitary over went for 20 and the game had slipped away.  Joe Crane, with 37 not out and bowling his three overs for just 12 runs and one wicket, was the standout performer.

Truro 1 were pushed hard by Ladock, who kept them to just 36 runs from their first six overs, but the city club managed to get over the hundred and then bowled well enough to keep Ladock well short.  Rob Harrison made 42 not out, well supported by Dan Ferris (25*) and Liam Lombard (22*) for the victors, whilst Alex Ridd contributed 37* for the plucky village team, who were unlucky to record no points in three close matches in the group.  Finally, Beacon bowled Truro 2 out for just 47 and claimed their expected place in the semis, for which they will warm up with a final group match against St Austell next Sunday.

Results: Group A – Newquay 104-3, Ladock 86-4 (Newquay won by 18 runs); Wadebridge 79-5, Newquay 80-4 (Newquay won by 2 wickets); Truro 106-3, Ladock 91-4 (Truro won by 15 runs); Group B – Roche 74, St Austell 75-1 (St Austell won by 5 wickets); Truro 2  47, Beacon 50-3 Beacon won by 3 wickets).

Newquay complete Finals line-up

Sunday’s Finals night in the CCB Indoor Sixes Cup competition will see four of the bigger clubs facing off, with Newquay edging through after Wadebridge were unable to find a win against table-toppers Truro 1, going down by the small margin of 15 runs.  The city side made 113 for 2, Tim Marrion (27*) and Dan Ferris (24*) the main contributors.  Wadebridge battled well (S Parkyn 28*, J Ross 22), but left themselves rather too many to score in the final few overs, so go out of the competition and will be back in the New Year for the League campaign.

In Group B, the already qualified St Austell and Beacon played for first place in the group.  The Tolcarne Road lads put up a good fight, keeping the Saints to a respectable 112, of which captain Gary Bone was again top scorer on 44 not out.  Newcomer Nick Matthews made 27 not out in support, much need as the other four wickets had fallen cheaply.  Beacon started slowly and, though making a good recovery, ended on 82 for 5 (Jordan Thomas 33*).  They will now face Truro in this week’s semi-finals.  Roche kept themselves off the bottom of Group B with a comfortable win over Truro seconds, who were bowled out for 53.  Ryan Clark and James Hunkin each took two wickets, then Dean Burnett (28*) and Ben Ellis (23*) knocked off the required runs without loss.

Results: Group A – Truro 113-2, Wadebridge 98 (Truro won by 15 runs); Group B – St Austell 112-4, Beacon 82-5 (St Austell won by 30 runs), Truro 2  53, Roche 56-0 (Roche won by 6 wickets).

Cup returns to St Austell

Sunday’s CCB Indoor Sixes Cup Final saw the two favourites battle it out once again, with eastern giants St Austell overturning last season’s defeat to city club Truro.  St Austell compiled a sound 115 for 4 in their 12 overs, thanks in large part to Alex Bone, younger brother of skipper Gary (22*), who first made the retirement score of 25, then returned to finish on 44 not out at the end of the innings.  The youngster, a member of the Cornwall Under 15 squad, has proved an able deputy for the third brother, Mike, who has decided to take a season off this time.  Tim Marrion dismissed Matt Ellison early on and the Saints were just 48-2 off six overs but, with Steve Raven also contributing late runs, again posted a challenging total.

There was an early wicket in the Truro innings, too, ‘keeper Alex Bone taking Marrion’s thick edge low down off Scott Barrott.  At 57-2 off 6, Truro were well in the hunt, but Gary Bone bowled a tight spell of three overs, two wickets for 14 runs, to regain control of the match.  This included possibly the key wicket, that of the dangerous Rob Harrison, caught smartly by Callum Wilson on the on side.  Kyle van Rooyen made 31, but was eventually run out trying to scramble the 33 runs which were needed from the final two overs.  St Austell thus claimed the trophy and will take on the Devon champions in the ECB national competition, at home, in February.

In the semi-finals, Newquay and Beacon both had off days, which they really didn’t need against such tough opponents.  Newquay’s modest score of 85 for 5 was passed by St Austell in the ninth over, Steve Raven having taken three wickets and Gary Bone making 24 not out to see his side home.  Beacon were skittled for just 47 by a Truro side which meant business on the night, Kyle van Rooyen returning the incredible indoor cricket bowling figures of 4 for 9.  Liam Lombard, 22*, helped his team to victory within six overs and the expected final was set up.

Results: Semi-Finals – Newquay 85-5, St Austell 86-3 (St Austell won by 3 wickets); Beacon 47, Truro 49-1 (Truro won by 5 wickets).  Final – St Austell 115-4, Truro 83 (St Austell won by 32 runs).

League campaign underway

The CCB Indoor Sixes League, the second part of the season, is now underway.  St Austell duly pocketed the Cup competition in December and will meet the Devon champions on 8th February.  They also got off to a flying start this week, Steve Raven top scoring with 40 not out in their 144 for 3 against Beacon.  The west Cornwall side then slumped to 12-4, before Dan Mellor (27) and David Dowling (20) moved the score up to a respectable 86 all out.  The other fancied side, Truro, also had a comfortable win, defeating Newquay by three wickets, skipper Rob Harrison returning the excellent bowling figures of 3 wickets for 8 runs.

In Group B, Truro 2 recorded a fine win, reaching their target of 111 in the penultimate over.  Stuart McNair scored 33 not out to see them home after Roche had posted a very useful 110 for 4.  Against the same opponents, Ladock gained an outstanding victory, dismissing Roche for just 27, having recorded a fair, but most attainable, 95 for 5 themselves.  Paddy Morgan scored 23* for the winners and Richard Bray, after being hit for two sixes in his first over, came back with a vengeance, taking three for 20. Truro’s second team made a fairly average 84 all out against their Newquay counterparts, but their bowlers made them fight all the way.  Youngster John Key took the first two Truro wickets, both lbw, then made a retirement score of 25 not out.  Newquay 2 eventually got home with three balls to spare, to keep the group very well balanced indeed.

Results: Group A - Newquay 82, Truro 85-3 (Truro won by 3 wickets); St Austell 144-3, Beacon 86 (St Austell won by 58 runs).  Group B - Roche 110-4, Truro 2  111-4 (Truro 2 won by 2 wickets), Ladock 95-5, Roche 27 (Ladock won by 68 runs); Truro 2  84, Newquay 2  85-2 (Newquay 2 won by 4 wickets).

Sunday 25 January

Truro power on

Truro’s first team put in another imposing performance, scoring 130 all out in exactly 12 overs against Beacon.  Tim Marrion completed a half-century (52) and new signing Adrian Noott made 42 before they were both amongst three batsmen to be run out.  Beacon made another valiant effort, but again found that, despite being one of the ‘best of the rest’, the top two teams are a much bigger hurdle to overcome.  They were bowled out for 70, again off the final ball, Liam Lombard claiming two of the wickets.  In the other Group A match, Newquay 1 were unable to raise a competitive side and, unfortunately, had to concede to St Austell.

In the weekend’s other match Ladock were most convincing winners against Newquay 2.  The village outfit posted the big total of 133 for 2 in their twelve overs, with Dave Legge, Matt Butler and Patrick Morgan all making 25+ retirement scores.  Morgan then also picked up two wickets as Newquay struggled, eventually losing their sixth and final wicket before reaching 50.

 Results: Group A – Truro 1  130, Beacon 70 (Truro 1 won by 60 runs).  Group B – Ladock 133-2, Newquay 2  48 (Ladock won by 85 runs).

Sunday 1 February

Low scores in Sixes

There was rather less free run-scoring in this week’s matches at the Cornwall Cricket Centre, except for Ladock’s 138 for 3 against Truro II.  Dave Legge made 49 not out, Richard Bray 37* and Craig Butler 30* in the imposing total.  Stuart McNair scored a creditable 27* in the reply, but Truro were unable to score at the required rate and fell well short.  Group A’s big game was really the decider for third place and a semi-final slot.  It turned out to be a very low-scoring affair, as Newquay, who only made 77 for 5 themselves, performed remarkably well in the field to restrict Beacon to just 52-5, with only David Dowling reaching double figures.  Richard Spall returned the excellent figures of three overs, 2 wickets for 4 runs.  A weakened St Austell were handed a rare hammering, as Truro 1 beat them by 4 wickets, with more than four overs to spare.  Both sides had, however, already secured semi-final places.Alex Bone scored 37 for the Saints in their disappointing total of 78.

Next Sunday sees the Cornwall v Devon play-off at the Cricket Centre, Truro, 6.30pm start.  Cornwood will be representing Devon against the local Knockout Cup champions St Austell.  The winners then travel to the regional finals at Taunton.

Results: Group A – Newquay 77-5, Beacon 52-5 (Newquay won by 25 runs); St Austell 78, Truro 1  80-2 (Truro won by 4 wickets).  Group B – Ladock 138-3, Truro 2  74-3 (Ladock won by 64 runs).

Sunday 8 February

St Austell trample Cornwood in Sixes

In Sunday’s county play-off round at the Cornwall Cricket Centre, Devon champions Cornwood batted first and struggled early on.  The red plastic ball, still used in the ECB competition, moved around like the proverbial banana and the St Austell bowlers, notably Callum Wilson, bowled an awkwardly short length which the batsmen found most uncomfortable.  However, the visitors recovered to reach a respectable 98 for 2 in their twelve overs, Jason Hall top-scoring with 21 not out.  Despite losing an early wicket, it was a fairly comfortable stroll for the experienced home side, led by Gary Bone, 28*, and Matt Ellison, 25*.  The win was achieved with seven balls and four wickets to spare.  They now travel to Taunton for the regional finals in three weeks’ time.

The final regular league fixture was also played this week and Roche eased past Newquay’s second team, which gained them second place in their group.  ‘Guest’ Ben Ellis, enjoying his games for Roche in the indoor league, made 25 retired, along with Ryan Clark, 28*.  Roche’s challenging total of 121 for 3 was too much for Newquay, who finished over thirty runs short.  Ben Retallack did make an impressive 28 not out for the losing side, though.  The two sides, along with Truro 2, are now joined by Beacon, the bottom team from the stronger Group A, in the Plate semi-finals on 22nd February.

Results: ECB Play-off Round – Cornwood 98-2, St Austell 99-2, 10.5 overs (St Austell won by 4 wickets).  Group B – Roche 121-3, Newquay 2  88-4 (Roche won by 33 runs).

Truro win Indoor Sixes

In Sunday’s League Final, Truro gained revenge for their Knockout Cup defeat and, in beating arch rivals St Austell, created a mirror image of last season’s indoor competitions, when the Saints were League Champions and the city men took the Cup.  New signing Adrian Noott was the trump card for the winners, making 44 not out and managing to extend the Truro innings to the full 12 overs.  St Austell skipper Gary Bone clean bowled three Truro batsmen in returning figures of three for 20.  A score of 98 is not often enough to win these big games, but the early loss of Matt Ellison, caught by Rob Harrison off the bowling of Dan Ferris, followed by the run outs of Gary Bone and Callum Wilson, tilted the balance.  Young Alex Bone was soon left stranded, with fours overs remaining in which to score the second half of the runs on his own.  He made 38, but it was not to be and he was also run out, in the tenth over.  St Austell were out for just 60 and went down by 38 runs.  On the season overall it was a fair result, with the two teams taking one trophy each, but it would be refreshing to see a few other clubs gathering together six players to challenge the two rivals in future years.

In the semi-finals, Truro had a comfortable win over Newquay.  Batting first, they scored 132 for 4, of which Adrian Noott contributed 33 not out, Marc Lewis 32*, Rob Harrison 29 and Dan Ferris 21.  Steve Richards (25) and Joe Crane (22) made useful scores for Newquay, but they were never that close to the rate required and went down by 44 runs.  The second semi-final was an even more one-sided affair, as St Austell reached 125 for the loss of just one wicket, a run out.  Alex Bone, Matt Ellison, Gary Bone and Callum Wilson all made retirement scores.  A valiant Ladock side were bowled out for 54, though Patrick Morgan scored 21 not out.  Liam Watson recorded the excellent figures of four wickets for 10 runs.

Results: Semi-Finals – Truro 132-4, Newquay 88 (Truro won by 44 runs); St Austell 125-1, Ladock 54 (St Austell won by 71 runs).  Final – Truro 98-5, St Austell 60 (Truro won by 38 runs).
