First action in the Indoor Cup

The new indoor cricket season is underway, with each team having played once in the Cup competition.  There are two groups of four teams, with the eventual winners qualifying for the ECB national competition.  There have been no surprises yet, with the big favourites, Truro and St Austell, recording comfortable wins.  Truro made 116 for 4 against a decent Newquay side, Rob Harrison scoring 30 not out.  Joe Crane top scored with 31 for Newquay, who were all out for 85.  In the same group, the most competitive tie of the first round went to the final ball, as Wadebridge’s Rob Centini and young Sam Richards scrambled through for the winning three runs and 18 in all from the last over in a fairly low-scoring game with Ladock.  Centini ended on 27* and Charlie Ellis had earlier made 25*, Richard Bray (24) being the leading batsman for Ladock.

 Beacon got past the hundred against Roche, led by Matt Floyd (29*) and James Pook (26*), but their opponents lost too many early wickets and folded to 42 all out, including three run outs.  However, James Hunkin made an attacking 25 before being bowled.  St Austell’s Gary Bone (46*), Scott Barrott (33*) and Matt Ellison (28) had a field day against Truro’s second string, before bowling them out for 40, Barrott completing a fine all-round display by taking 3 wickets for 10 runs.

Results: Group A – Truro 116-4, Newquay 85 (Truro won by 31 runs); Ladock 89, Wadebridge 90-2 (Wadebridge won by 4 wickets).  Group B – Beacon 106-3, Roche 42 (Beacon won by 64 runs); St Austell 162-3, Truro 2^nd 40 (St Austell won by 122 runs).

Beacon, Truro & St Austell through to Cup semis

                       Two more evenings of indoor cricket have seen three of the ‘big guns’ through to the semi-finals of the CCB Cup competition.  Beacon and St Austell now have maximum points in Group B but, in Group A, Wadebridge can just pip Newquay to the final place if they manage to overcome Truro 1, who have already qualified. 

Newquay and St Austell recorded comfortable wins over Ladock and Roche respectively.  Jacob Rowe made a valiant 35 out of Roche’s 74 all out, but that was never enough, as St Austell’s Alex Bone (25*) and Matt Ellison (26*) knocked off the required runs in half of the allotted overs.  Newquay got past the hundred mark thanks to Richard Spall (28*) and Joe Crane (31*) and their score of 104-3 was just a bit much for Ladock, whose reply was respectable, but never quite up with the required rate.  Dave Legge made 28 not out in their 86 for 4. 

            Wadebridge and Newquay played out an interesting, though low-scoring match, with Newquay eventually cruising to victory, but the Swans were in the hunt after 8 of the 12 overs.  Their 79 for 5 (Jodie Ross 23) was well below par, but they bowled well and hung on until Will Cooke’s solitary over went for 20 and the game had slipped away.  Joe Crane, with 37 not out and bowling his three overs for just 12 runs and one wicket, was the standout performer. 

 Truro 1 were pushed hard by Ladock, who kept them to just 36 runs from their first six overs, but the city club managed to get over the hundred and then bowled well enough to keep Ladock well short.  Rob Harrison made 42 not out, well supported by Dan Ferris (25*) and Liam Lombard (22*) for the victors, whilst Alex Ridd contributed 37* for the plucky village team, who were unlucky to record no points in three close matches in the group.  Finally, Beacon bowled Truro 2 out for just 47 and claimed their expected place in the semis, for which they will warm up with a final group match against St Austell next Sunday. 

Results: Group A – Newquay 104-3, Ladock 86-4 (Newquay won by 18 runs); Wadebridge 79-5, Newquay 80-4 (Newquay won by 2 wickets); Truro 106-3, Ladock 91-4 (Truro won by 15 runs); Group B – Roche 74, St Austell 75-1 (St Austell won by 5 wickets); Truro 2  47, Beacon 50-3 Beacon won by 3 wickets).

Sunday’s Finals night in the CCB Indoor Sixes Cup competition will see four of the bigger clubs facing off, with Newquay edging through after Wadebridge were unable to find a win against table-toppers Truro 1, going down by the small margin of 15 runs.  The city side made 113 for 2, Tim Marrion (27*) and Dan Ferris (24*) the main contributors.  Wadebridge battled well (S Parkyn 28*, J Ross 22), but left themselves rather too many to score in the final few overs, so go out of the competition and will be back in the New Year for the League campaign.

In Group B, the already qualified St Austell and Beacon played for first place in the group.  The Tolcarne Road lads put up a good fight, keeping the Saints to a respectable 112, of which captain Gary Bone was again top scorer on 44 not out.  Newcomer Nick Matthews made 27 not out in support, much need as the other four wickets had fallen cheaply.  Beacon started slowly and, though making a good recovery, ended on 82 for 5 (Jordan Thomas 33*).  They will now face Truro in this week’s semi-finals.  Roche kept themselves off the bottom of Group B with a comfortable win over Truro seconds, who were bowled out for 53.  Ryan Clark and James Hunkin each took two wickets, then Dean Burnett (28*) and Ben Ellis (23*) knocked off the required runs without loss.

Results: Group A – Truro 113-2, Wadebridge 98 (Truro won by 15 runs); Group B – St Austell 112-4, Beacon 82-5 (St Austell won by 30 runs), Truro 2  53, Roche 56-0 (Roche won by 6 wickets).

Cup returns to St Austell

 Sunday’s CCB Indoor Sixes Cup Final saw the two favourites battle it out once again, with eastern giants St Austell overturning last season’s defeat to city club Truro.  St Austell compiled a sound 115 for 4 in their 12 overs, thanks in large part to Alex Bone, younger brother of skipper Gary (22*), who first made the retirement score of 25, then returned to finish on 44 not out at the end of the innings.  The youngster, a member of the Cornwall Under 15 squad, has proved an able deputy for the third brother, Mike, who has decided to take a season off this time.  Tim Marrion dismissed Matt Ellison early on and the Saints were just 48-2 off six overs but, with Steve Raven also contributing late runs, again posted a challenging total.

There was an early wicket in the Truro innings, too, ‘keeper Alex Bone taking Marrion’s thick edge low down off Scott Barrott.  At 57-2 off 6, Truro were well in the hunt, but Gary Bone bowled a tight spell of three overs, two wickets for 14 runs, to regain control of the match.  This included possibly the key wicket, that of the dangerous Rob Harrison, caught smartly by Callum Wilson on the on side.  Kyle van Rooyen made 31, but was eventually run out trying to scramble the 33 runs which were needed from the final two overs.  St Austell thus claimed the trophy and will take on the Devon champions in the ECB national competition, at home, in February.

 In the semi-finals, Newquay and Beacon both had off days, which they really didn’t need against such tough opponents.  Newquay’s modest score of 85 for 5 was passed by St Austell in the ninth over, Steve Raven having taken three wickets and Gary Bone making 24 not out to see his side home.  Beacon were skittled for just 47 by a Truro side which meant business on the night, Kyle van Rooyen returning the incredible indoor cricket bowling figures of 4 for 9.  Liam Lombard, 22*, helped his team to victory within six overs and the expected final was set up.

Results: Semi-Finals – Newquay 85-5, St Austell 86-3 (St Austell won by 3 wickets); Beacon 47, Truro 49-1 (Truro won by 5 wickets).  Final – St Austell 115-4, Truro 83 (St Austell won by 32 runs).
