Indoor League kicks off

            All teams bar one have now completed a match in the CCB Indoor League, with no real surprises.  New teams The Tones and RNAS Culdrose were well beaten, but the latter gave a good account of themselves against a strong Truro side.  Dan Ferris made an impressive 43 not out for Truro, well supported by Liam Lombard and Andrew Senior (both 27*), in their 126 for 3.  The Tones, a team based around the Leedstown club, were heavily beaten by the now experienced Ladock indoor side, who just got past the hundred mark in their innings (A Ridd 27, D Legge 25*, A Gates 25*).  They dismissed their opponents for just 17, a harsh lesson in what is a very different game from outdoor Saturday afternoon cricket!

            Local rivals Grampound Road and St Erme also played on Sunday evening, with the CCL Premier club strolling to a 42-run win.  The Road’s David Hoskings (27*), Lewis Sanders (26*) and Alex Rust (23*) scored well, as did Spencer Wilcock, who made 27 not out for St Erme, who were unable to score quickly enough to threaten their opponents’ score of 110 for 2.  St Austell’s two sides were both in action this week, too, with mixed results.  The strong first team made the huge ten overs score of 150 for 1 wicket.  Regulars Alex Bone and Matt Ellison were joined by newcomer Hugh Parkinson in making retirement scores, well supported by wides, which contributed thirty-five!  Perranporth slumped to 42 all out, as the wickets were shared amongst the Saints’ attack.  Beacon also started their campaign well, reaching 99 for 5 in their innings (James Pook 38*), before restricting St Austell 2 to 62 all out

Group B: Ladock 101-3, The Tones 17 (Ladock won by 84 runs); Grampound Road 110-2, St Erme 68-2 (Grampound Road won by 42 runs); Truro 126-3, RNAS Culdrose 74-4 (Truro won by 52 runs).

Ellery stunner downs ‘Road

            Ladock’s Mike Ellery produced a stunning solo performance on Sunday evening as his side came from deep in trouble at 21-4 to overcome their big local rivals Grampound Road.  Chasing the reasonable, but certainly not imposing, target of 88 to win, it looked all over right at the start but, batting at No. 5, Ellery rose to the challenge, making 45 not out and winning the match with three balls to spare.  For the ‘Road’, Lewis Sanders and Alex Ridd had both scored 25 not out and Sanders had also grabbed two early wickets, but the fun was yet to come!  Also in Group B, The Tones had clearly gained much from their initiation last week and replied to St Erme’s 94 for 3 (Jordan Wilkinson 26*) with a very respectable 78-4, captain Luke Stuckey making 27 not out.

            Beacon continued with a comfortable win over Perranporth, accumulating the 61 runs required without losing a wicket.  James Gool scored 25*, whilst Dave Dowling and James Pook took two wickets apiece.  Jeremy Bradley did his best to make the Perran score a respectable one, but he was on his own with his 32 runs.  Tristan Perry performed a similar role for Gerrans in their debut match, making 35*, but his team’s total of 71 for 4 was overhauled by St Austell II in just over 7 overs, Nick Mathews (25*) top scoring for the winners.

Favourites march on

In Sunday’s Indoor Sixes fixtures, Truro and St Austell again achieved comfortable wins. St Austell accounted for the competitive Beacon and completed their ‘double header’ with a stroll to victory over their own second team. Alex Bone made 35 not out and Matt Ellison 35 against Beacon, in the side’s 120 all out. All six batsmen contributed in their second match and the total of 139 for 2 was never going to be a realistic target for the seconds, who at least enjoyed their game with their seniors.

In Group B, Truro accounted for The Tones with ease. Dan Ferris (33no) and Ross Farrer (28no) led the scoring and Luc Lombard took 3 wickets for 14 in the reply of just 78, of which Tones Captain Luke Stuckey made a most creditable 45. The one really competitive game of the evening was between Culdrose and Ladock, whose greater experience of the indoor game eventually saw them home. The navy side’s Captain, ‘JJ’ Walker, scored 41 not out in their 67 for 5, which didn’t look to be enough. However, some good bowling and enthusiastic fielding kept the match close until the eighth over. Simon Newland (25no), who struck his first ball for six, and Richard Bray then accelerated and guided the village club home with ten deliveries to spare.

Lessons handed out in Sixes

             The learning curve continued for two of the new teams at the CCB Indoor Sixes last weekend, as Gerrans suffered a fearful mauling at the hands of St Austell and The Tones went down to fellow newcomers RNAS Culdrose.  Gerrans made just 14 after having conceded the large total of 136 for 3, of which brothers Alex (31*) and Gary Bone (32*) were the highest scorers.  Saints skipper Gary then took three wickets for 5 runs in the reply.  The Tones continue to improve and Luke Stuckey contributed 27 not out in their 78 for 2 against RNAS Culdrose, but the Navy lads comfortably overcame this in seven overs (J Walker 27*, W Legge 26*).

            Truro and Ladock lead the way in Group B, the latter having seen off local rivals St Erme by 3 wickets.  Richard Bray again batted well, for 27 not out, assisted by Simon Newland (25*).  Grampound Road’s poor run continued in a disappointing finale to the evening, when they were shot out for 48 against Truro, which resulted in a stroll to victory inside 7 overs for the city team.  In the final two weeks of the regular League fixtures, there could now be a few closer matches, though, as some of the struggling teams are due to play each other and Ladock meet Truro at the top of Group B.

Big wins as 3 teams take maximum points

             St Austell’s young second team cemented their place in the Plate semi-finals with a closely-fought win against Perranporth.  The Pilchards recorded the good total of 90 for 4, of which Russell Milsom made 48 not out.  The game was in the balance until the penultimate over, when the Saints boys grabbed all 14 runs required and picked up a bonus point in the process.  Gabe Connolly was their top scorer, with 27*.  Grampound Road batted first against RNAS Culdrose and just crept over the century mark, making 101-1, then blasted the servicemen out for just 38, to win by the big margin of 63 runs.  Alex Ridd scored 26* and Lewis Sanders 22 for the winning side.

            Truro regained top spot in Group B as they racked up 147 for 2 against St Erme, for whom Callum Edgcombe made 22 in their reply of 59 all out.  Ross Farrer scored 45 not out and Conor Miles 25* for the city men, who now lead Ladock by three points ahead of their big clash next week.  Andrew Senior also hit 27* and took two wickets for 14 runs.  Unusually, a third successive match then saw a team collect the maximum six points, when Beacon confirmed second place in Group A with a huge 103-run win over Gerrans, who have found the going really tough.  However, they do have a game with Perranporth next week, in which one of the two teams will still qualify for the Plate.  Beacon’s run-getters were James Gool (26*), Dom Batchelor (25*) and Matt Floyd (25*).  Three run outs did not help the Gerrans cause as they folded for just 20.

Sixes Final again for big two

            A depleted St Austell batted first against Ladock in this week’s Indoor Sixes semi-final, but they still rattled up a score of 138 for 2, Kyle van Rooyen, Hugh Parkinson, and Gary Bone each making the 25 retirement score.  The village team were certainly not outclassed, though, and recorded a very decent 110 runs in reply, with five of the six wickets being run outs.  Patrick Morgan scored 27 and Richard Bray 22 for the losing side.  Truro won rather more comfortably against Beacon, who saved their most disappointing form for this game.  They collapsed to just 37 all out in reply to the big 154 for 3 scored by Truro, of which opener Conor Miles scored 45 not out, well supported by Adrian Noott (34*), Andrew Senior (25*) and Dan Ferris (24).  Tim Marrion then returned the excellent figures of three wickets for six runs with his beguilingly innocuous bowling.

In the Plate, St Austell’s seconds had a free passage to the final, after the non-appearance of RNAS Culdrose.  There was then a close, low-scoring game where Grampound Road were restricted to just 58 for 4, but managed to hold off the challenge of Perranporth.  Jeremy Bradley bowled an superb three overs for the losers, conceding just six runs.  However, Russell Milsom’s 12 was the only double figure score of the match and his side registered three ‘ducks’ as the Road’s bowlers all rose to the task.  Lewis Sanders took 2 wickets for 10 runs and his team edged into the final.

Saints complete the double

            The big Finals Day in the CCB Indoor Sixes went with a bit of a whimper on Sunday, as Truro succumbed to St Austell in the main final, making just 40 all out, and the Saints second string were no match for Grampound Road in the Plate.  Scott Barrott took 2-6 for St Austell and Andrew Senior made 19 for Truro, but wickets fell steadily throughout the innings.  Gary Bone’s team then wrapped up the match inside six overs to do the Cup and League double.

In the Plate, Grampound Road’s Alex Ridd put in a ‘Man of the Match’ performance in just one over, as he took the first 5 of St Austell second team’s wickets for just one run, a wide, without actually managing a hat trick!  The over went WW-WWwideW, with two lbws, two bowled and the other caught behind.  Nick Matthews rescued his team from complete oblivion with a score of 26 in the eventual total of 30 all out.  Earlier, the Road had scored 108 for 4, Lewis Sanders making 35* and Alex Rust 26*.
