Hawkey Cup
Roche Exit Village Cup

Roche went out of the Davidstow Village Cup at the Quarter-Final stage in the most dramatic of games at Goatacre. Dreams of becoming only the third Cornish club, following Troon and Werrington, to reach the semi-finals all went terribly wrong after a dream start. After electing to bat the home side crashed to 23 for five after just six overs. Ryan Clark, who ended with six for 39, did all the damage. His third over included three wickets in five balls.
Jonathan Wilkins (28) and Kevin Iles (21) added 54 to steady the ship. Iles skippered the Wiltshire side to two Village Cup titles in 1988 and 1990. In the second final he famously hit 123, his hundred off 39 balls the fastest ever at Lord’s. Lee Tarbuck struck twice however and at 93 for eight, with 13 overs to go, Roche were in the box seat. It all fell apart as number nine Alan Griffin made 31. Then the last pair of Dan Wiseman (40no) and number eleven Matt House (60no) blasted 101 in the last seven overs.
A shell shocked Roche lost their first six wickets for 57 after Adam Trudgeon made 18. Stewart May made a defiant 28 to get the total to 133 but, sadly for the Cornish side, it was a case of “what might have been”.
Goatacre travel to Cambridgeshire’s Foxton in next week’s semi-final.
Goatacre 231-9 (M House 66no, D Wiseman 40no, A Griffin 31, J Wilkins 28, K Iles 21; R Clark 6-39, L Tarbuck 2-55),
Roche 133 (S May 28, A Trudgeon 18; K Iles 3-27).
