CALLINGTON v SOMERSET CCC  at CALLINGTON on WEDNESDAY JULY 24th 2013

ARUL SUPPIAH BENEFIT MATCH

Callington were delighted to host this prestigious game against the stars of Somerset County Cricket Club, as part of the Benefit Year of Somerset player Arul Suppiah, who has been forced to retire early from first class cricket due to injury. The Somerset side was led by Peter Trego who played a season for Callington in 2002, and he treated the large crowd to a feast of hard hitting, making a fantastic 99 in just 9 overs, including 9 fours and 10 huge sixes before being stumped by Joe White off Matt Robins. Craig Keiswetter had earlier been bowled by Dan Davis and then England batsman Nick Compton weighed in with a quick 76 in only 38 balls before being bowled by Andrew Libby. Craig Meschede had made 16 when he was caught on the boundary by Dan Davis off Robins and John Avandano kept the high tempo going with an unbeaten 41 as Somerset rattled up 254 in their 20 overs.

Clearly Callington were not going to get close to such a large total, but Matt Robins made 26 and Dan Davis 34 against the bowling of Hart and Keiswetter. Steve Kirby took out White and Andrew Libby, but Aidan Libby hung around to make 23 before being caught by Kirby off Compton. As Somerset relaxed their bowling there was a sting in the Callington tail as Jim Shorten made a quick 42 and Alex Mortimore 23 as the home side were bowled out for 175.

This was a great day for Callington Cricket Club who also marked the occasion by officially renaming the New Road ground “MOORES PARK” in tribute to their former Chairman Peter Moores who passed away in 2012
