Club Development
Veryan withdraw from 2 East

League Statement
With regret the Jolly’s Drinks Cornwall Cricket League have agreed to a request from Veryan CC to withdraw their Division 2 East team with immediate effect. Division 2 East will therefore comprise of 11 teams only for the 2016 Season. Veryan CC will therefore be represented by one team in Div 6 Central.
In a letter to the League the club stated “We have had several meetings during the winter trying to find new recruits to bolster our resources. That has unfortunately proved unsuccessful . We have no fewer than seven players who play football (six of whom are first team players) and due to the extraordinarily wet winter, they will not be available to play cricket until the middle of May, or possibly beyond.
Further to that, our first team has been depleted by a retirement and also another player who is unavailable due to work/family commitments. We also have three first team players at university until June. The same problem (regarding football) would also occur for the last two or three weeks in August and September.
The issue has been highlighted at our indoor nets, in which we had seven players from the two teams attending, only two of which were regular first teamers. There is simply not the sustained level of commitment or availability required to field a "senior" team.
We simply do not have the quality of player in the second team that can make the transition to Division 2, as was evidenced by the fact that they had to seek re-election in Division 6 Central this season.
In a bid to encourage youngsters to play cricket, we feel that the only prudent course of progression is to play in Division 6, which will allow players to compete at a level suitable to them.
Veryan Cricket Club realises that this is of great inconvenience to the league and for that we can only apologise. It is not a decision that has been taken lightly, but it is one that is realistic and will allow the club to take a pause for breath, before stabilising and hopefully starting to prosper again”.
